Comment:

 I think it happens only when this directory is missing.

 /home/olpc/.local/share/icons/sugar/scalable/mimetypes

 I couldn't figure out exactly how cscott got in that situation, but
 evidently it can happen. The fix is simple, we just need to check if the
 directory exists.
