Comment:

 I've attached a patch for #2866 and #3993.  W.r.t. Eben's requirements in
 comment 13 ( http://dev.laptop.org/ticket/2866#comment:13 ), this patch
 does everything except for the notifications (point number four).

 It'd be nice if this could get in to 0.82.1, but of course we'll see how
