 dsd very kindly found me some python code that exposes the problem.  The
 good news is that it seems to be fixed in the RandR 1.2 branch of the
 driver, so I must have done something right.  The bad news is I'm not sure
 exactly what that was.  Also, the RandR 1.2 branch has broken icon
 drawing, so I need to address that.   Once I do, probably the best course
 of action would be to backport the EXA code to the old driver en-masse.
