 Ah, here is a clue:  the superfluous icon finally went away after I exited
 my original instance of Browse.

 I had been viewing a Screenshot from the Journal, which launched a second
 instance of Browse.  I had Full-Screened that second instance, then exited
 with alt-esc, which left the persistent "Full-Screen" icon in the upper
 right.  Eventually I quit my first instance of Browse, then the persistent
 icon disappeared.

 It's a bug, but does not look too serious.
