 I was rebooting rather frequently since I kept finding crashes so it's
 entirely possible that things went down as you suggest. However, how could
 the Journal ever have shown me the 'DEF' title (and generated the
 corresponding .metadata file) without having gotten the Xapian index into
 a consistent state?
