 Sorry, I forgot to mention I was testing only Browse's startup. The patch
 doesn't make also chat 1s faster :)

 Tomeu, I was using that snippet to get the icon's size through cairo
 calls; I deleted it as the get_surface call is very slow (the LRU
 implementation is very slow).

 I don't see any other downsides but the cropping bug; a workaround would
 be increasing the clipping area of a small factor.

 I think we should also try to tweak the number of fps as garycmartin
 suggests; perhaps Eben can tell what higher value for _INTERVAL would
 remain reasonable (if it wasn't already tweaked so) ?
