Comment:

 In a first draft I used to:
 {{{
        surface = self._buffer.get_surface()
        if surface:
        # ... get surface size ...
 }}}

 but deleted the snippet because startup became even slower. Is it needed
 in any cases ?

 Startup is 1s (worst case) faster with the patched icon.py, both X and
 shell's cpu usages decreased quite a bit.
