Comment:

I explored some more (still in joyride-2301), and discovered I was partly
wrong: UpArrow and DownArrow are mapped to the Directional Pad (Up and
Down), so I can indeed scroll thru and Read an ebook in ebook mode (though
I always keep backlight on). The user interface has apparently changed
from earlier versions of Read, but is usable after the user learns by
trial-and-error how to use it. I still would like a Help screen,
accessible within Read, to explain the user interface.

Part of my frustration was caused by extremely slow response that led me
to believe that the Directional Pad was not recognized by Read. When
zoomed in more than "Fit Width", then horizontal scroll of my 250-page
ebook was glacially slow. Keeping zoom at "Fit Width" or farther out
 makes D-Pad scrolling okay.
