 OpenID is the mechanism used to implement this, in most of our informat
 designs at least.  It uses the school server as an authentication proxy,
 and works for any website which supports OpenID (and there are many).

 FWIW, our internal web services should also support OpenID so we're eating
 our own dogfood and using the standards we're pushing!
