 On Joyride-2263, selecting ''Refresh'' on the ''Software update'' panel
 costs a one minute delay and a surprising amount of wireless data
 transfer, per ''tcpdump''.

 Of nine HTTP conversations, the largest is 30 seconds long and consisted
 of 1361866 bytes of packets, and 220972 bytes within the stream.

 (The local network apparently has a duplicate packet problem, not yet
 diagnosed fully, but probably not relevant to the issue).

 The connection to the internet is HSDPA wireless broadband, at 3000kbit/s,
 showing average latency to wiki.laptop.org of 350ms:

 {{{
 rtt min/avg/max/mdev = 325.590/346.900/368.173/7.164 ms
 }}}

 Deployment conditions may be worse.
