> With the new split between the ring interface and the list interface in
the new interface, problems arise. I prefer to use the ring, as it is more
intuitive and friendly, but sometimes I need to open an activity in the
list view. After I do so, the button on the frame and the keyboard that
normally takes me to the ring (the one with the icon on it that looks like
the ring) takes me to the list. To get back to where I was, there's
another action to take to get out. This introduces frustration and
confusion.
This is an interesting observation, since we actually designed it just as
you describe on purpose. The hopefully evident distinction here is that
the button on the keyboard and frame takes one to the Home ''level'',
which has two alternate ''views''. In other words, the ring and the list
are both ways to look at Home. In the future, the other zoom levels will
also have list views (and potentially others).
The logic for retaining the view is that some way wish to use the ring
view most of the time, while others might prefer to use the list view all
the time. Additionally, it might be that some wish to use the ring view
in Home, but the list view in the Neighborhood, and so on. This was our
reason for choosing to make the views contextual to each level, instead of
global, and why we chose to retain the settings when leaving and
returning.
> Perhaps the list could go away after something has been selected from
it? Maybe there's another solution.
One potential feature which might make this less of an issue is the search
field within the toolbar when in the ring view of the Home level. In our
designs, this will eventually serve as a launcher, allowing one to type
the first few characters of an activity they use infrequently to locate
and start it, without having to manually switch to the list.
