Comment:

 This presents privacy issues.  It should therefore be optional, at a
 minimum.

 IM programs typically provide optional idleness detection.  When the user
 enables idleness detection, the user may opt either to show idleness on
 the basis of total system activity (e.g. whether screensaver is active) or
 on the basis of IM activity.  There is no option to indicate whether each
 IM window has focus at any given time.  I presume this is because nobody
 wants to broadcast (or receive) this information, and doing so would waste
 a significant amount of bandwidth.

 So be careful with this.
