Comment(by jg):

 One more thought: turning it off entirely, or allowing the driver to set a
 rate in software, is in order.

 Say we have a school of 300 machines; (we already have one of these).
 Even at a rate of .5hz you get 150 pps.  That's quite a bit of load...

 At 10 hz, 100 machines has been generating 1000pps; we have something like
 that number of machines in our environment.  So it wouldn't surprise me if
 the power problems may not be mostly just the signal processing of this
 beacon.
