Comment(by ssb22):

 Hardware magnification will not work due to dot clock issues. The DCON
 specification seems to be saying that the dot clock is fixed. This means
 it is not possible to add a half-resolution mode to /etc/X11/xorg.conf,
 even with doublescan. Doublescan makes the vertical resolution
 effectively unchanged, but the reduced horizontal resolution still results
 in halving the dot clock (or doubling the refresh, which would also be out
 of DCON spec). There doesn't seem to be any kind of "pixel doubling"
 option in Xorg like a horizontal equivalent of doublescan.

 So it's down to software magnification (unless we can get Wine itself to
 use large fonts everywhere, but that's difficult with the old versions of
 Wine that are sometimes necessary). x11vnc has server-side magnification,
 but it'll be CPU hungry (you need to run a separate X display, and x11vnc
 has to poll the display for changes, and you also need to run a VNC
 client) and therefore it could run the battery down. I don't know if
 there's a way of magnifying in software without polling the display (for
 example if you know the application is not going to update the display
 when no keypress has occurred, can x11vnc halt its polling?)
