 The http://wiki.laptop.org/go/Early_Boot system makes it hard to boot
 without an initramfs.  This could be considered a security feature;
 however it is probably desirable to provide a staticly-linked /bin/init in
 the "real root" of the filesystem which:
 * checks to make sure activation isn't being requested (or subverted)
 * chroots to /versions/boot/current, then
 * execs the new /bin/init.
