 I did some research on this issue.  Here is the best explanation that I
 found:

 If we keep mtab in /etc, the disadvantage is a fair amount of unnecessary
 JFFS2 filesystem traffic.  If we make /etc/mtab a symlink to /proc/mounts,
 the disadvantage is that umounting a loopback device will not
 automatically free /dev/loopN.

 I vote for doing the symlink.

 But I am not in a position to actually make the change, because I don't
 own that part of the system.
