 CORRECTION!  UPDATE!

 It's silly, but I decided to click on the mute button and raise the
 volume.  Clicked play again: Success.

 So, the problem in the browser plugin is that it started mute for some
 reason.  Better check if the same happens in other systems, or maybe it
 was just mine being attacked by gremlins.  Bloody gremlins.

 Note: the plugin's volume control is independent of the ALSA mixer.


 The "Watch & Listen" problem remains however.  And there, no independent
 volume control exists to blame.
