Comment:

 I think there are two stages to this, the first of which I'd much rather
 get done sooner.  When an XO drops (completely, not taking into account
 weak signals), I'd still really like an outline to appear in it's place.
 It should remain for some interval of, say, 10 seconds.  If the XO
 returns, it should fill back in.  If not, the outline should disappear and
 only at that point be "forgotten about" by the UI and layout system.

 This can certainly happen without the added information about signal
 strength.
