Comment:

I should not be assigned this bug. I don't design the screen, I just
implement it. If I tried to design it, I would get yelled at. I am
 reassigning the bug.

That said, here are some answers to sj's concerns, as I understand them:

 1) I disagree that many children will encounter this screen. If they do,
we have failed. Getting machines activated should be the task of the
deployment team. They should not leave until the machines are activated.

 2) The three icons indicate the three sources from which you can get an
activation lease: SD, USB, and the school server (the wireless icon).
Like the boot-source icons shown at boot, they may not be self-evident to
a naive observer, but are important in allowing a knowledgeable technician
 to diagnose problems.

 3) Originally the laptop ID only showed up when activation failed. The
reason was to make the deployment team's job easier: the failing SNs can
be communicated 'home' and new leases generated. However, there was
another bug filed (#900) insisting that every laptop display its serial
number on every boot "in order to settle disputes over ownership". This
is a design issue, I just do as I'm told.

This bug should be assigned to someone who can come up with a reasonable
alternative design, and include the necessary artwork. I'd then like to
see some consensus around the design before I change the existing &
 working code.
