 Some tools - in particular shapes and selections - should have a fixed
 aspect ratio mode, to be activated while holding the SHIFT key.  This
 allows one to create squares and circles instead of rectangles and
 ellipses.  It also allows one to create a symmetrical star.  It is also
 useful for lines, which should snap to straight lines (and perhaps 45s).

 Pressing and releasing the SHIFT key should update the preview shape live
 while creating it.
