#3702: Pressing "erase" should clear contents of selection

 This relates somewhat to #3701, but I feel that it is a requirement
 independent of the use of selection as a mask for other tools.  Erasing
 the contents of a selection is fundamental.  Erasing the contents of a
 selection should simply "fill" the selection in white.  It should not
 remove the selection.

 This also provides a way to clear a canvas, assuming we add select-all
 functionality (#3699).
