 Ah, I see, you definitelly want the user to know for sure he isn't looking
 at a real page of the book, which may happen the first time¹ he reaches a
 white page with an "loading" icon or text. I was thinking on the lines
 that the disruption should be minimal, thus the white page. But now that I
 think about it, I agree with you: I too have allways been puzzled for a
 second by the Loading-on-white-page, when It first appeared on an pdf in
 evince.
 The grey page could be mistaken as a crash, since that's usually what you
 see when the Journal or other activity stops responding, or variation of.

 So perhaps you should give your first idea a shot: it would definitelly be
 recognized as a "normal" Sugar behaviour, and the idea be understood as
 well. One less symbol to impose to the kids (should Record also use a
 simillar technique then, when it is rendering the movie just recorded,
 instead of the clock face?).
