 So, I apologize for my incomplete testing, I now see the problem:

 1. Open Write
 2. Type a long sequence of ''non-space'' characters
 3. Try to make a selection.

 It is a function of the word-based selection mechanism.  Ivan, could you
 provide insight into why word-based selection was the decision? I might be
 persuaded it was the right one, because I can see both sides of the
 argument.
