 Test with 588:

 Backward compatible:
 connect, clipboard object image/photo (open fine in browse), etoys, paint,
 turtle art, write,
 record(no preview, thumbnails got distorted, but you can show it),
 chat(does open in write, text/plain in journal)

 Backward problems:
 web(i guess i can fix that), newsreader, video(does not open)

 Missing activity error:
 - calc, mini tamtam, block party, watch&listen, tamtam-edit, terminal
 activity, classic gnome activity

 BTW: you do not have to reboot the laptop when the journal crashes, you
 can restart X with ctrl+alt+erase
