 I did the test from above again after marco's modifications:

 XO:
 1 a=+ b=+
 2 a=+ b=+
 3 a=+ b=+
 4 a=+ b=+

 sugar-emulator -x:
 1 a=+ b=+
 2 a=+ b=+
 3 a=+ b=+
 4 a=+ b=+

 His changes had a nice side effect as well. With the old code when
 changing back from the detailed view the volumes toolbar had visual
 artefacts. This is gone now.
