Comment:

 Have you tried this to see if you actually don't get permissions?  In the
 current Fedora we control permissions via the consoleuser pam plugin and
 udev.  Fedora 8 should have ConsoleKit and PolicyKit but the concept is
 the same.  If you are not getting permission to the serial device it needs
 to be added to a file in /etc/security/console.perms.d/ but as far as I
 know all USB devices should become owned by the current console user which
 is olpc.
