 Update: after removing AC power, the laptop now refuses to switch on
 (pressing the button causes the indicator light to briefly illuminate and
 then go out again).  The laptop was later observed with the charge light
 shining orange even though no power was connected.  Pressing the power
 button at that time caused the charge light to go out, but still no power
 on.  It seems that my XO can no longer be used unless AC power is
 connected.
