 For usb sticks, the mime property is determined by the datastore at import
 time using gnomevfs. I suspected gnomevfs to be returning application/zip
 as the mimetype instead of identifying it as a bundle, but testing it on
 jhbuild and 570 returned the right value.

 Have just done that procedure on jhbuild and on 570 but couldn't reproduce
 the issue, the bundle is installed and launched as it should be.

 The only explanation I can think for this, is that after copying the .xo
 file into the usb stick, the usb stick was inserted in an old image that
 imported it as application/zip.

 Inserting it later on 570 wouldn't redetermine the mime for the bundle, so
 it remained as application/zip.
