 Possibly related: If you rest your little finger, particularly the
 fingernail, on the wings (resistive area) of the pad while using your
 index finger on the middle area, the  pad sometimes recognizes the little
 finger as an attempt to use the wing area.  This makes the cursor jump all
 the way to the side of the screen.

 Perhaps this is happening more frequently with children than with adults,
 due to differing hand size, different pressure, different development
 levels (coordination), etc.
