 Replying to [comment:4 AlexL]:
 > One reason for this to be done is for finding journal entries from a
file browser. For example, paint allows the user to search through the
file system for images to insert.

Most activities won't be allowed to read the whole file system for privacy
 reasons.

 > If you have a picture in the journal: 1. It is not possible to get to it
because the file browser doesn't show . directories.

The journal doesn't have a hierarchical organization. See
http://wiki.laptop.org/go/HIG for a explanation of the journal concept.

 > 2. Even if one were able to get to the datastore, it's not in a human
readable form, so one still wouldn't be able to find the image file.

Activities should use the object chooser, and that would show the title,
icon, date, etc. about each entry, also allowing to search and filter.

 > This can be worked around by dragging the journal entry onto a usb
stick, and finding the image file in the media/(usbstickname) directory.

That won't be allowed once security is in place. Also, activities are
expected to use the journal for its storage and retrieval needs.
