Comment(by bemasc):

 Version 2 is just a slight speed improvement.

 Significant figures is something I've debated myself. There are two kinds
 of errors: random and systematic. Random errors in this system are very
 small. I can set up two XOs on opposite sides of the 1CC lobby, and they
 will read "10.34" over and over again. If you move them 1 cm, they will
 read "10.35". However, there is a systematic error because the speed of
 sound varies with temperature. This systematic error is 0.2% per degree
 Centigrade. Currently, the code simply guesses that the temperature is
 25C (77F).  If it's really 20C or 30C (68F or 86F), the distance will be
 consistently wrong by 1%, or 10 cm in that example. More extreme
 temperatures will yield larger errors. For the moment, I think the right
 solution is to give answers to 1 cm. I'm considering adding an additional
 tab in which the user may specify the temperature, but this would hugely
 increase the complexity of the interface.

 I'm not totally clear on PO files, but there is a po/ directory,
 containing AcousticMeasure.pot (English) and es.po (spanish). I wrote
 es.po myself, so it's probably not quite right.
