frame open. Instead, for the first 5 times the laptop is booted, move the
 mouse pointer to demonstrate.

We discussed this possibility, as teaching by demonstration is indeed a
useful tool. Two problems pushed it out of the options. First, we don't
want to impose a delay at startup during which this canned animation
plays. We could, perhaps, cancel the movement if the user interacts with
the mouse, but then there's no guarantee they see it at all. Second, we
do want some hint at each boot, I think. Ideally the hint would be
something easily ignored by familiar users, but useful to new ones, which
is where the arrows came from. Perhaps a slightly more subdued visual
treatment would satisfy the aesthetic for you? I don't think they're
 really much of a distraction.

the XO could play an animation of a finger hitting that button. (need
 images?)

This is practical in some situations, but not all. The controls in the
frame appear at the screen edges. Moving the mouse to a corner a
naturally places it in a position to seek out the button on the edge.
This behavior will actually be improved when the new mouse acceleration
shows up in the builds, since the frame will be invokable via gesture, as
 intended.
