 The key to improving initscript time is to run everything in parallel
 where possible.  Don't be tempted to remove features that you don't happen
 to use (like NFS or WPA).  See www.fastboot.org for serel, which adds
 infrastructure for expressing dependencies, visualizing dependencies and
 timing paths, and running scripts in parallel.  It worked in 2002 but no
 distro bothered to pick it up.
