 This is partially planned out, and the cursory overview exists in #3784.
 The only problem with that approach is that you only get notifications
 when people join/leave the current activity.  If we want to provide more
 than that - particularly in cases where an invitation you sent has been
 accepted - then we'll need to think a bit more.

 One way I can think of doing this passively is to add a badge of some sort
 (perhaps of the XO who joined) to the activity in the Home ring.  This
 way, Home becomes a place to view status of all sorts of things, including
 the activities and participants.  More active ways of doing this are via
 sound or some form of alert, but both of those can be rather invasive,
 particularly in classroom-type settings.  I'd lean toward a passive
 approach to this problem, really.
