 There are numerous opportunities to make the system startup faster.

 As a first cut, the attachment contains modified versions of
 /etc/init.d/functions and /etc/rc.d/{rc,rc.sysinit} that shave 11 seconds
 from the startup time.  Measured from first Linux startup messages to
 login prompt, stock 617 takes 47 seconds; with these files, it takes 36
 seconds.
