 Here is a link to a patch which claims to provide a smooth acceleration
 curve, which is a big step up from the stepwise function X provides.

 I think this is really worth a shot for 1.0, because anything would be
 better than what we have now.  I can't even move the cursor from top to
 bottom of the screen in less than two finger strokes, regardless of speed.
 Not good.
