 networking wasn't working on a c machine, in that neither mesh nor other
 network connection showed up in the main view.  the mesh view still showed
 an icon for all the access points expected in the office... then they
 doubled.  so there were two media lab 802.11 icons, both starred, for
 instance; and two of everything else except the mesh channels.
