 Some extremely exciting news from Marco & Tomeu tells me that we can
 provide some basic compositing support, likely by 1.1.  I don't want this
 one to slip by, because although it's in some ways "cosmetic", it will
 improve many aspects of the system, bringing us closer to the original
 designs and making things more intuitive.

 This ticket will serve as a place to aggregate some of the features that
 become possible/improved by adding this:

  - Much faster/smoother frame interaction (especially retraction)
  - Intuitive modal dialogs, fullscreen but with "smoked window" to provide
 context
  - A first class implementation of the bulletin board layer
  - Reliable screenshots (for activity previews)
