 That's still really complex.

 All the sliders can go. The laptop already has a control for loudness, so
 that one is redundant. The rest appear to control unneeded background
 noise.

 The drum kit selector is unneeded complexity. (what exactly does it even
 do?) Pick a few good percussion instruments and be done with it: bass
 drum, normal snare, snare with brush, snare rim, and a hi-hat.

 Many of the instruments simply aren't decent for playing a tune. Those
 really should go.

 Cutting back to just one good instrument would be an even better idea.
 This would make room for some other things that might be more useful for
 teaching:

 a. side-scrolling musical staff (teaches that high notes are at the top)

 b. keyboard diagram, showing where the drums are and possibly color-coding
 the notes
