 when scanningthe network, or trying to connect to a new portal, the [root
 console] terminal can freeze, and not allow ctrl-c to break out of a
 system command like ifconfig looking at network status.

 (in an env with both xs an simple mesh connections, while connected to a
 simple mesh)
