Comment:

dcbw is correct about automagic retries causing association time to go
nuts. DHCP sucks on many implementations, multiplied by wireless
unreliability of wireless broadcast, and doing in 3-4 times sucks 3-4
times worse. Doing things behind the user's back is just going to cause
trouble, sometimes with very large delays. We went there, and tried that
with the mesh algorithms early on: it sucked. Let's not repeat that
 disaster.

So Plan B is the only viable plan, given our experience. Drop down box I
think is the only way to go. As #3990 says, if that is too risky to
implement for Trial-3 (Tomeu's call), then please put text into the dialog
to make it clear what the syntax is.
