 Ok, I could live with the tab location if I didn't have to (a) change tabs
 to get anything done in an activity, and (b) if the close button on the
 keyboard worked to close the application, so I didn't need to switch tabs
 just to close them.

 I suspect there are ways to work around the GTK controls, for example by
 mapping a transparent window of the right shape/size over the top of the
 control.  When the transparent window is focused on, hovered over, we
 transfer focus/keystrokes to the underlying widget.
