 when I'm sharing a write activity with someone else, and our mesh drops,
 I'll keep on editing, but will lose his/her contributions.  sometimes one
 of us can see the other on the mesh, but not vice-versa, and we can both
 think we are sharing the same activity (one started by user 1, showing up
 as an icon with user 1's colors) while seeing different text.

 there should be some indication that the mesh is or is not being shared
 with a friend -- that roundtrips between two machines can happen somehow
 -- and an 'away' indication when that drops off.

 right now we have a much simpler notion of 'away' in the group view which
 makes gray anyone you have seen in the recent past, but can't se now...
 that's not precise enough to help activities indicate when the sharing
 aspect may be fading in and out.
