 Isn't this a hardware issue?

 By "lines" or "marked area" I mean the grey lines that are printed on the
 plastic which serves as the outermost layer of the physical device.

 My measurements were done there, not on the screen.

 The cheap fix would be to print the grey lines differently, so that they
 form a smaller rectangle. Note that the margins did not seem to be
 symetric, so either the lines or the underlying touchpad hardware may need
 to be offset.

 The better fix is to make the touchpad extend out to the grey lines. Kids
 are having plenty of trouble with the touchpad (see bug #4032); the
 situation would likely improve if the touchpad filled the whole area
 within the grey lines.
