This is because when you choose "Create..." on a Mac, it doesn't create an
_infrastructure_ connection like an access point is. It creates an ad-hoc
IBSS. We don't show adhoc IBSS on the XO because every XO's mesh shows up
as an adhoc network so you'd get a lot of useless APs in the mesh view
(that said, we can filter those out by using the mesh beacon tag).
Even if an adhoc network showed up, it's not clear how to connect to it.
Few people run DHCP on their adhoc networks, but Mac-created ones don't
use DHCP. However, you can't know that before you try to connect to the
network, so you have to just do DHCP and wait 30s for the DHCP to time
out. Then try whatever method Macs use to find the gateway (maybe reverse
ARP on the MAC address of the IBSS cell?)
