 It certainly *could* be a bug with the driver.  It is really hard for me
 to tell, though, since I have not been able to reproduce it.  I really
 wish that somebody who *can* reproduce the problem would try it with the
 current upstream version of the driver, which has some important changes
 to the initialization code.  I'm going to mess with it some more to see if
 I can make the problem happen, but it has been an exercise in frustration
 so far.
