 Carla, to clarify some of your points, it is not necessary to first "make
 friends" before you share or join an activity. The first thing you tried
 should have just worked.

 Can you please let us know whether you were sharing via a (school) server
 or not? If you're not sure, let us know whether the XOs were connected to
 an access point with Internet access.
