#4066: connecting a network breaks sugar or X

This is OS build 613. I'm trying to use a USB-to-Ethernet
device that worked fine with OS build 406.

I get an all-white screen with the traditional X cursor
if I try to boot with the USB-to-Ethernet device attached.
Every now and then (a minute perhaps? five minutes?)
 the X server restarts.

The network is IPv4. There is a DHCP server that hands out
address 10.0.0.5 routing via 10.0.0.4. DNS server info is
not provided as far as I know; NetworkManager on the old OS
build never put anything useful into /etc/resolv.conf.

If sugar is waiting for anything on the network, then there
is a start-up performance issue even when things go better.
In any case, no matter the network, sugar should start.
