 As I wrote, the encryption gets turned off. Without encryption, I cannot
 talk to the WEP-enabled router.

 Manually assigning an ip does not cause enc to turn off. I can ping
 another machine on the same  wlan, but only for a few seconds after
 bringing the interface up. Cannot ping the router IP.
