 I tried 'yum install gcc' as root.  It failed with:

 Error: Missing Dependency: glibc = 2.6.90-19 is needed by package glibc-
 devel
 Error: Missing Dependency: glibc-headers = 2.6.90-19 is needed by package
 glibc-devel

 It seems that the included glibc is considered too old.
